What is a TOVA?
TOVA stands for Test
of Variables of Attention. It
is a computerized continuous performance test that is medically
necessary to titrate medication doses and measure treatment efficacy. It
uses nonlinguistic stimuli and is extensively normed.
Through the TOVA, a patient's
neurophysiological vigilance, visual information processing, and
response inhibition can be tested. However, its results alone are not
sufficient to diagnose attentional deficits, nor does a normal result
preclude attentional deficits, especially when the test is performed
while the patient is on medication. Clinical correlation is still
necessary to forming a proper diagnosis.
